As important as vitamins are, they can do nothing for you without minerals. Vitamins cannot be assimilated without the aid of minerals. And though the body can manufacture a few vitamins, it cannot manufacture a single mineral.
Like viatimins minerals act as coenzymes, enabling the body to perform it's functions including growth, energy production and healing.
ALL enzyme activity involves minerals.

Minerals are naturally occuring elements found in the earth. Rock formations are made up of mineral salts. Rocks and stones are gradually broken down into tiny fragments by erosion ( over millions of years).
The results of this are dust and sand accumulations that form the basis of our soil.
The soil is full of microbes that utilize these tiny crystals of mineral salts which in turn of course are passed formt he soil to the plants.
The plants are then eaten by herbivorous animals. We obtain these minerals by consumption of the plants and animals.

There are 2 groups of minerals BULK MINERALS (macrominerals, calcium, magnesium, sodium , potassium and phosphorus) and TRACE MINERALS (microminerals boron, chromium, copper, germanium, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium, silicon, sulfur, vanadium, and zinc)
The body requires larger amounts of bulk minerals than trace minerals.
This thread will include anoverview of each.

Minerals act as catalysts for many biological reactions within the body, including muscle response, the transmission of messages through the nervous system, the production of hormones, digestion, and the utilization of nutrients in foods.
When it comes to supplementing common foods with essential nutrients one of the concerns is that, if too many foods we usually eat contain added minerals, and, if at the same time people are taking supplements, there is a very real possibility that mineral toxicity may be a problem.
So as always research and exercise caution
